Educating One Student at a Time

It is the new school year in Nepal and our team in Nepal is back into the swing facilitating Hamro Abhiyan programs in schools.

It is hoped that the education and exposure of the Hamro Abhiyan Anti-Trafficking program will yield fruit in the form of fewer cases of girls being trafficked and, therefore, fewer girls needing to be intercepted at the border crossings. This is a long-term strategy but one about which we and our field partner 3 Angels Nepal feel excited and confident. Interception at the border is crucial because intercepting a girl before they cross the border may be their last chance – but we all need to work hard to see a future where significantly reduced incidences of girls being tricked into a terrible and potentially life ending situation takes place.

Reflections from Educators

Many schools have been identified in hot-spot trafficking regions of Nepal. Students from these regions are from poor, lower class families and are considered easier targets by traffickers. When the schools finally reopened after months of lockdown, our dedicated team of experts made a big push to reach out to as many schools and communities possible.

Training the Nepali Police and Armed Forces

“The program was successful to deliberately provide the relevant enormous knowledge about human trafficking which directly helps our police to deliver effective and relevant services.”

Moving Forward Despite Challenges

When the pandemic started in 2020, the Hamro Abhiyan Anti-Trafficking Awareness Program was one of our most affected programs on the ground. This 2021 was no different. There were window periods when restrictions were lifted, but were cut short with surges of COVID cases.

More than 300 Women and Children Reached

As many people have lost their jobs, a lot have been suffering from mental issues, a number of families are not able to put food on their plates, and the risk of trafficking is continuously increasing. Out of desperate need, some may be resorting to selling sexually explicit materials online, while some may be easily lured to crossing the borders illegally in search of foreign employment. Our partner, 3 Angels Nepal, turned to communities, reaching them one by one and conducting awareness programs so that women and children remain informed.

Awareness Program for Transport Workers

Our partner, 3 Angels Nepal, saw the crucial role of transport workers in Nepal in combating human trafficking. Knowingly or unknowingly, they could be transporting potential trafficking victims across the border.
