Thirty women are now halfway through the 2019 My First Job Assistant Chef Training in Western China. Throughout the journey, 2 women have dropped out due to family commitments. The remaining 28 women are successfully learning to cook 40 dishes.
Renchen, a successful local chef, has been diligently teaching the women in this program since it started in 2016. “I have a wonderful job and I am happy to be able to help local women to be independent,” explains Renchen while he busily teaches the art of cooking. Some of the main dishes he teaches are different soups, various fried dishes and, the women’s favourite, Tibetan food such as yoghurts, bamboo cake and ginseng dishes.
Many of these women have never been to school. This program not only teaches them the art of cooking but also basic reading and writing. Because of all these, opportunities are now opened to these women that would not be possible before. This program will conclude in November when 28 women will be skilled and equipped to secure jobs in the food industry.
