3 Years On and Flora is an Independent Business Woman!

This is Flora and her two adopted children, Michael and Jeremy. Some of you may remember us running a story on Flora back in 2014. To recap, Michael and Jeremy were orphaned when they were toddlers when both parents died from AIDS. These little boys had no where to go so Flora took them into her home with her husband and their already 6 children. This created additional financial burden for them. How were they going to provide for all these children?

Flora (3)Three years ago, Flora came to Captivating/ACDF Micro Loans Program with her plight, and she immediately entered the loans program.

Flora started with the purchase of just one cow. She then dedicated herself to the savings program on a weekly basis which enabled her to buy two more cows. Today, she is the proud owner of three healthy milking cows. These milking cows provide milk for her family with excess milk being sold to the local dairy. This also brings the opportunity to breed the cows for extra income.

Flora (2)Three years ago she also began with just a small maize field. Today, Flora is now a small scale farmer where she plants acres of maize to sell commercially having made the decision to rent more land. In a month she can sell  up to 6 sacks, making an average profit of 5400 shillings [US$50] each month.

Today, Flora’s children are older and all at boarding school. Michael will be finishing primary school this year and begins secondary school next year while Jeremy will continue his primary school education.

ACDF LogoAND TO THE BEST NEWS OF ALL:  Flora has repaid all her loans and now operates independently and self-sustainably as a successful business-woman. Together with her husbands income of teaching at the local school, she is confident that they will be able to continue all their children’s education and be able to provide a bright future. This is one of our treasured success stories of the Captivating Foster Family Loans Program in Kenya. We are so proud of Flora as she continues to work hard to provide for her children as well as her adopted children, and thankful to the dedicated work of our partner, ACDF, and Captivating’s Program Manager – Everlyne Onwonga.

From Loss to Recovery

In celebration of International Women's Day (March 8), we recognize Gladys and the many other women just like her who have amazing stories of endurance, empowerment, and hope. With the help of the Foster Family Loan's Program in Kenya, she has grown her small fire-wood business to sell second-hand clothes around the community. This is an important step for her to provide for herself and her new-found family.

An orphan boy and his FOREVER FAMILY

As a toddler, Michael was found abandoned near an orphanage entrance one morning. The workers took him in and gave him food and shelter. Michael stayed there til the age of three. This is when Venice enters his world. Venice and her husband tried for five years to have a child but were not able. They decided to adopt an orphan who needed a family, so they visited the orphanage and that's when they met Michael. They knew right then that Michael was meant to be theirs.

Sold for $4 but now has home

Jared's mother enjoyed drinking and also gave the brew to her little boy. Often, the villagers would find the mother very drunk and little Jared sleeping in the cold. Jared would often get sick and almost died a few times. Finally, Jared's mother couldn't take care of him any more so she decided to sell Jared to one of her customers. Jared was sold for Kshs. 450 (US$4).
