Aiming to reach 1,500 Families through Manila Slum Project

We visited two slum areas situated within Barangay Loyola Heights, Marytown and Daan Tubo, as we extend the reach of the Manila Slum Project (MSP) in the Philippines. The Group Services team and 3 mothers that we’re training from Ronas Garden went with us for this visit. We were accompanied by Ms. Kristel, a staff member of the barangay council for children’s protection. We walked throughout these areas to personally see the families and children and their living conditions. There are around 1,500 families in Marytown and Daan Tubo.

According to Ms. Kristel, children-at-risks were identified from these areas. Walking through dark and narrow alleyways led us to makeshift houses where we found children playing. We also noted a striking observation during our visit passing through a tunnel built above a creek. There were houses on both sides of the tunnel but there were no passage lights so it was dark, and children were casually passing through it. We also noticed teenagers huddling in a dark corner seemingly doing something suspicious. Talking with the residents and seeing these areas firsthand made us more aware of unsafe places just tucked beside private subdivisions and surrounding condominiums along Katipunan Avenue.

Ms. Kristel shared her hopes that cases of street children and children-at-risks in these slum areas would lessen as they look forward to our project’s partnership with their neighborhoods. She witnessed the improvement of the children’s well-being in Ronas Garden through the project and hopes to help more families and children living in these depressed areas.
