The situation in Nepal has been unstable since the start of pandemic - lockdowns implemented, schools and businesses closing, many becoming unemployed. Even our My Business My Freedom Program has gone through rough times, with some staff getting infected with COVID-19.

Sangita is one of the many women in My Business My Freedom program who have been affected by the pandemic and the series of lockdowns implemented in Nepal. Her business was going well until the lockdown was announced due to the second wave of COVID-19.

Community Helps Family with a Newborn Baby

While Janani (not her real name) delivered her baby at the public hospital, she was found to be infected with COVID-19. She was then kept in isolation while her husband was unable to see her and their newborn for two weeks. Due to the medical expenses, all their family's savings were depleted.

Timely Interception

Tanuja (name changed for protection and privacy), 19, lost her father when she was younger. Before her father died, he took a loan from the bank to build them a house. However, they were left with a huge financial burden after her father died, and without any other source of income. Things got worse when her uncle cheated them and transferred the ownership of the house under his name, and Tanuja and her mom where forced out of the house.

Recently, three female victims, Sakshi* (18), Maya* (21), and Bimala* (17), were intercepted by our team as they attempted to cross the border into India. These three women had been working as servers at a guesthouse in South Asia.
