The Incredible Progress of Women in the Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program
Over the past month since the Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program for Women started, the students have diligently punched in every day.
On May 2nd, 33 families in remote Qinghai province in China, joined the Pigs for Poverty Project and received 2 piglets. This project provides training, program management & support, and 2 quality breeding sows to get them started in their new small pig raising business. This will enable increased income producing capacity and resulting in children remaining in school.
One of these 33 recipients is Li Jimei. She is a strong, diligent and thrifty single mother who devotes everything to her children. Her husband died of stomach cancer two years ago, leaving her with 2 children. In order to support her children, she tries to find work in doing anything that she can. But for this single mom, every day is a challenge. Her dream is to be able to give her children the best life she can. Because of the Pigs for Poverty Project and her 2 piglets, this single mom’s income will increase, the children will eat better, stay in school longer, and mom will be able to stay home with the kids instead of looking for jobs in the city.
90 other families are currently being selected and will receive their 2 piglets over the next few months. A special thank you to our partners CAF America, Altria, the donors from the 10th Charity Auction and Shamtse Charity for believing in the Pigs for Poverty Project and joining us in reaching out for a better tomorrow.
