OMY: Wu Jingmei Now Studies Animal Medicine!
Our beneficiary, Wu Jingmei, wrote to share how the One More Year Scholarship Program has brought new hope and opportunities to her life.
While significant progress has been made in improving education access in China, disparities still exist, especially in rural areas and among certain demographic groups.
The Captivating ONE MORE YEAR Scholarship Program aims to give a scholarship to a girl for one year, hopefully longer. This program is vital because it’s widely known that each additional year a child spends in school significantly improves their chances for a better life. They can earn more money, become better parents, and make wiser decisions for themselves and their families.
Adi Wujia is one of the many students who can continue her studies through the One More Year Scholarship Program. Adi comes from a family of 5, wherein she and 2 of her siblings are already in their schooling age. Their family has little income, which makes it difficult for all three of them to continue their studies. Moreover, her father has diabetes, and her mother frequently gets sick because of her old age. That’s why she extended her deepest gratitude for the support when she was chosen to be one of the scholars of the OMY program,
“First, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you for supporting me amidst a sea of people. Although we have not yet met, fate must have brought us together this way.
There have been times when we had no money for living expenses and had to borrow from our relatives. However, as time passed, even our relatives hesitated to lend us money. I have considered giving up countless times, thinking about finding work to earn money to support our family. However, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to make much, and factories are not interested in hiring someone as young as me. My parents were also determined to support us in our education, even if it meant selling all their possessions. So, we persevered and got to where we are today. I never imagined that someone besides my parents would give me money to buy various study materials and clothes and provide me with moral and material support. I feel like I’m dreaming.
One day, when I saw Teacher Fang at school, we were both touched by her gentle voice. Teacher Fang made me feel as warm and reassured as my parents do. I imagine you are also kind and gentle, like Teacher Fang. Therefore, I will study hard in the future and grow up to help people in need, just like you. You have given me hope that life is not just about overcoming struggles but also enjoying and living it to the fullest.
Of course, I also had a very happy semester because more people cared about me. Although the pandemic has disrupted our everyday lives, it has not prevented us from living well and studying hard. If you have time, please come to our school, and I will show you around my campus and introduce you to my friends.
Once again, thank you so much for your support. You are not a superhero, but you have given me superhero-like care.”
