Bagong Silangan Elementary School (BSE) is one of the biggest schools in Payatas, a known dumpsite area in the Philippines. Due to poverty in the community, children are often left to scavenge in the trash instead of going to school. The Principal and teachers of BSE work hard to keep the parents engaged and encouraged to pursue education for their children. They would invite the parents to quarterly meetings and training, but often, only a few parents would attend.
For the Children’s Month celebration, they invited our implementing team in the Philippines, Honor 1000, to give a talk about online safety to the parents. More than 1,000 parents attended! The parents stayed for the whole talk even when there were no more seats for them, and they had to stand up the whole time.
After the seminar, the Principal and teachers shared that they hadn’t seen such attendance as well as attentiveness from the parents. This helped them realize that guiding children in their use of gadgets and the internet is such a relevant topic. They invited us again to train their teachers so they can reach more parents with our online safety awareness campaign.
We are encouraged by the growing interest of schools to partner with us in fighting against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) to help protect the dignity and innocence of Filipino children.
