In rural China, many families face persistent poverty and a lack of sustainable income sources. Agricultural market fluctuations, environmental challenges, and limited access to necessary resources make financial improvement difficult. Today, pig farming (and animal farming in general) is considered an expensive luxury by many of these families. Consequently, less meat is consumed by families. This, coupled with few quality vegetables from the farm due to high altitude farms producing less, and limited funds available to purchase at market, has resulted in overall nutrition issues for villagers (especially children). These challenges create significant financial pressures, limited opportunities, and obstacles to supporting children’s education and meeting basic needs.

Our Solution

The Pig Farming Program equips impoverished families with the latest training and resources necessary to establish successful pig farming businesses. Our comprehensive solution includes:

  • Expert Training: Participants receive the latest training on running a successful pig farming operation, including:
    • Keeping pigs disease-free.
    • Proper feeding techniques to maximize growth.
    • Strategies for achieving the best market returns.
  • Quality Livestock: We work with county-based experts to supply high-quality piglets that are resilient to disease and climate challenges. These experts also provide training to ensure success. Piglets are delivered to the village and allocated to qualifying families and single mothers during a “celebration” day.
  • Business Support and Ongoing Assistance: Participants learn essential business skills, such as saving, budgeting, and reinvesting profits to grow their businesses. We fund vaccinations for the first year and provide ongoing access to advice and support from local pig experts to ensure participants progress confidently through their first year.

The Pig Farming Program empowers families with the knowledge and resources to build sustainable pig farming businesses, significantly improving their cash incomes. It costs RMB 5,000 (USD 700) to support a woman and her new pig business. If she continues with the program, she will make a profit of RMB 5,000 (USD 700) per year, every year thereafter.
