A new problem has been gaining incredible momentum over the past few years – the online cybersex industry. Emerging anywhere from the slums of Manila to remote countryside villages, internet access enables live video streaming at home with children being innocently used to perform online acts for paying predators. What starts as simple play by parents or guardians desperate for easy money quickly deteriorates, leading to more greed, more serious acts, and eventually cybersex. As these children become teenagers, they are conditioned to see this as an easy money route, and the downward spiral continues.

THIS HAS BECOME A CRITICAL ISSUE with the Philippines now RANKED FIRST among nations targeted for cybersex crime.

How it Works

We are implementing the Stop Cybersex Crime Awareness and Education Program to reduce the future incidence of trafficking and cybersex crime through targeted advocacy in strategically selected schools in marginalized districts of the Philippines, focusing on regions assessed as highly at risk of trafficking or abuse. Our programs will reach 25,000 students every year. Education is the key strategy. With most teens (and younger children) having Facebook accounts at local internet cafes, the risk of predatory invasion is huge. However, education on keeping personal information safe is lacking, as is awareness of appropriate online behavior.

Additionally, the strategy targets an even more concerning audience – impoverished single mothers. They are easily attracted to the “easy money” offered by online predators, especially those who want to see their young daughters. Many parents do not see a moral conflict in exposing their children online to predators, thinking they are safe because there is no physical contact. This prevailing attitude must change – and education is the key.
