Our Chicken Farming Program aims to help families increase their financial income, enabling them to better support their children’s education and overall well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 3,000 to 6,000 [USD 424 to 848] annually.

One of our grateful beneficiaries is Qumume Sehuo (40). When we visited Qumume in their home, she led us to a small room that used to be a bathroom. There, lively and healthy chicks chirped and pecked—a good sign that her family would do just fine. However, when we met her daughter and husband for a chat, it turned out that the reality of their family situation was quite the opposite of our impression.

During our conversation with her husband, we learned that he has a chronic illness requiring long-term medication that allows him to work outside for only up to three months. The family also must repay a loan of CNY 20,000 [USD 2,827] while providing for their four children, two of whom are in school. They live in government housing, and the family’s annual income of CNY10,000 [USD1,400] primarily comes from farming and poultry breeding. A chunk of their expenses go to their two children’s schooling, and their income is not enough for their necessary expenses.

Qumume’s husband lit up and expressed immense joy and gratitude as he shared how the program has been a lifeline for their family. Their children are also doing their fair share in helping their household. Their eldest daughter, who just graduated from junior high school, plans to work in Fujian to offset the family’s financial burdens; while their second daughter, freshly graduated from primary school, currently helps at home by taking care of her younger sisters.

With our support, Qumume Sehuo now has a new way to increase their household income. She diligently manages her household and their chicks with unwavering dedication. We hope that our program will uplift this family, providing the support they need to prevent their children from discontinuing their education due to poverty.
