We believe that a lot of impoverished mothers have the chance to elevate their and their children’s living standards if only given the opportunity to do so. Because of this, we started our My Business-My Freedom Microfinance Program (MBMF) to provide microloans starting at PHP 6,000 (USD 102). One of the mothers we helped through this program is Mamata Rana (26).
She lives in Dhangadhi with her husband and son. Her husband is involved in public service while her son is in fifth grade. Since she married and had a kid early, Mamata never really prioritized making money for herself despite believing in the importance it holds for a woman’s freedom.
Before joining the Gulab women’s group, Mamata mainly did household chores and raised a few goats. She realized that she can grow more if she took goat herding seriously, afterall, she already knows what there is to know about goats. She started with a loan of NPR 30,000 (USD 214) and then bought more goats. She also learned that there is no waste in growing these animals because their manure could still be used as a fertilizer for vegetable cultivation.

Every month, she makes NPR 10,000 (USD 73) which adds to her household income and her son’s schooling. The ability to make her own money through goat herding just motivates her to keep growing.
Mamata’s story is not just an individual success story. It also shows a tangible example of how women are more than capable of what their society tells them. Mamata now loudly advocates for women empowerment in her village and this inspires other women who also want better lives. She actively engages in community outreach, raising awareness about critical issues such as human trafficking and sexual abuse. Through her efforts, she contributes to creating a safer and more equitable environment for all.
We just love seeing these women’s growth first-hand. All our efforts and hardwork make the most sense when we hear back from them. We continue to help women like Mamata achieve their dreams, raise educated children, and advocate for women empowerment.
