In the third quarter of last year, we started a way to motivate our Captivating Village Program (CVP) scholars to attend their classes regularly. 23 students from Bijauna village who obtained an attendance rate of over 90% received a reward of NPR 300 (USD 2.2) each. 3 students made an impressive 100% attendance, while the rest are at 90% and above.

The program was designed to be a monthly event. This way, the students could look forward to committing to short-term attendance goals without realizing that they are already attending most classes in all of the school year! For this quarter, it happened in July and August, which carries over to succeeding quarters.

Why did we conduct this effort? Because many of our girls feel less motivated to attend school. They would rather work or stay at home despite our efforts to teach them the importance of education. We understand that committing time and effort at school takes a while to pay off, and it’s easier to attend activities that give them faster rewards. Creating a regular reward system hopefully helps them to see schooling as important as their household work or labor jobs.

At the end of each program, the teachers express their thanks as always. They mentioned significant improvements since we started this small award-giving program. The students are much more motivated, and more are engaged in their lessons. We will continue to do this in the upcoming quarters.
