Roshni (15) lives in a family of six. Her father is the main breadwinner, working as a daily laborer—meaning, income is unstable. When an employer decides that they would no longer need Roshni’s father’s help, the work would also stop. Many poor Nepali families at least have some land to cultivate crops and raise livestock, but they do not—furthering food instability in their home. Despite having desire for her mother and other siblings to step up and work, they could not. The below-minimum wage earnings that their father takes home are not enough to support their good health, causing them to always be ill at home.
Since even the most basic needs are unmet, other basic human rights such as Roshni’s education is extremely difficult to achieve. Due to their family situation, Roshni was forced to drop out in 4th grade. And even if they did have a few resources to make it happen again, her parents’ minds have been plagued by the notion that girls like her should be educated. To them, girls are unworthy of knowledge as they are only good for raising children at home, hence her 4th-grade education was “enough”.

One day as she was talking with her friends, one of them mentioned our Captivating Village Development Program. She heard about the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) classes in their village that reach out to girls exactly like her! Giddy with excitement, she came and asked for help from our community facilitator, Ms. Ranjana Kumari Yadav. Just like that, she was enrolled in a center.
Part of helping these girls is also reaching out to their families about the importance of education to girls like Roshni. When they understood, her father happily thanked us for providing the opportunity for girls like her to participate in our ALP sessions. Roshni is the most thankful of all, for receiving the gift of education yet again.
