Our Manila Slum Program helps support girls from vulnerable families by funding their schooling. Every month, they will receive financial support, and in return, their parents must attend our regular meetings for check-ins on their children’s progress. They are also required to attend seminars that cover important topics like OSAEC (Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children) awareness and online safety. Future sessions will also focus on parenting effectiveness, as guided by the DSWD’s Parenting Effectiveness Service (PES). These efforts help our girls grow into kind, responsible, and well-rounded individuals.

But it’s not only the girls who benefit from our program, but also their mothers. Through regular meetings, we were able to gauge which households need more income assistance so that their children could focus more on their studies.

Last March, Joel from Global Development Group (GDG) visited Ronas Garden, the first slum community of the Manila Slum Program. Through the visit, we saw the program’s impact in empowering mothers from slum communities to become more sustainable. The mothers proudly showed us their small businesses and expressed their gratefulness for the assistance and support they received. Through our skills training, mentorship, and continuous support, these women are taking active steps in transforming their circumstances and creating sustainable income sources for their families.

The mothers’ determination to rise above their challenging environment demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit when given the right opportunities and support. By establishing their micro-businesses, they are not just improving their immediate circumstances but also setting positive—even inspiring—examples for their children and community.

Moving forward, we remain committed to our mission of supporting more families in slum communities. We are guided by our belief that sustainable change happens when we work together with our beneficiaries as equal partners in development. We are very grateful to GDG and our Philippines partner, Sanghaya Foundation, for working with us towards a shared goal of bringing about sustainable change to these communities.
