To achieve health improvements and meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is essential to establish an effective and efficient health system. No one must be left behind in the pursuit of health equity. However, Nepal’s challenging geographical terrain and topography have hindered its citizens from meeting international health standards. In response to this crisis, our Captivating Village Development Program conducted a two-day women’s reproductive and mental health screening camp in Panchkhal Wards 2 and 12 on February 18 and 19. 607 women received medical attention from the two wards.

We chose to focus on reproductive and mental health because these two aspects of women’s health are typically neglected in these communities. Conservative societal attitudes and a lack of awareness make women in rural areas suffer from what could have been preventable illnesses if they received immediate medical attention. The women underwent various checkups, like cervical cancer screening, cryotherapy, ring pessary insertion, mental health assessments, and gynecological checkups. Those who require medications received them for free. For women suffering from severe uterine prolapse, access to life-changing surgery was made possible through our program. Patients received follow-up care and were referred to designated hospitals where treatment and surgery were provided free of charge. Of the 10 women referred, 7 chose to proceed with surgery, while 3 opted out for personal reasons. Our team stood by each woman throughout the process, visiting them before and after surgery to ensure their well-being, and covering essential needs like food and transportation to ease their journey to recovery.

This initiative was made possible through the valuable partnership and support of the local government of Panchkhal Municipality and COSAN. Prior to the camp, multiple site visits and meetings were conducted with the local health authorities. Additionally, an orientation session was organized for the female community health volunteers and medical practitioners of the municipality to ensure thorough preparation for the health camp.
Overall, it was a successful event, and we were delighted to have made medical attention possible for women in disadvantaged households. A key to a quality life is good health, and we are proud to be a part of the improvement in these women’s lives.
