The pandemic took a toll on a lot of people’s lives, especially on the poor. Lenny, a wife and a mother, understood the effect of the pandemic even after the Enhanced Community Quarantine policies.

In her pre-COVID world, she sold street food and had loyal customers. Her salary supported her family and already had a steady stream of income. When the lockdowns hit, they were financially desperate and needed to take out high-interest loans that they are still paying for until today. As if that struggle was not too much to handle, her husband also lost his job due to a work-related accident. At that moment, Lenny’s life was in shambles.

When the restrictions were lifted, she started her small business once more! She sold rice cakes, pancit (noodles), and other snacks. Determined to improve her chances of earning more, she applied to our One Hope Microfinance Program. We saw her determination and willingness to keep moving forward, and not too long after, we granted her her first loan in 2021. Our loan not only helped her business, but also her self-esteem. We love seeing her move more confidently and trust in her abilities.

Fast forward to this year, 2025—Lenny’s business is booming! Not only is she selling in her own locality, but she also has clients from other areas in the Philippines— earning way more than her pre-pandemic sales. When her women’s group needed a secretary, Lenny happily volunteered! Her role is to help the project assistant in completing the ledger at every meeting.

Lenny keeps moving with the purpose that her existence alone inspires other mothers to keep trying like her. Looking back at her life four years ago, she is undoubtedly thriving. She recognizes this and never falls short in expressing her heartfelt gratitude.
