Sakil (15) is a 9th-grade student. His classmates know him as a shy and reserved boy, yet he is also very hardworking and talented. He would be hesitant to speak in front of other people, while he would silently take on personal self-improvement projects. His personal journey changed when he learned about the formation of a Children’s Club in his community through the Captivating Village Development Program.

At first, he didn’t know what a child club meant or its objectives, but that didn’t stop his curiosity. He looked into it further and learned about its activities and initiatives, like quiz contests, sports events, and inter-school competitions. After some encouragement from friends and family, he finally joined. Sakil started working in the background at first, but his hard work and potential kept shining through. Later, he was elected as the club’s vice president, which gave him a confidence boost!

During his time as a vice-president, Sakil was forced to step out of his comfort zone. They added more activities to their term, like cleanliness drives and plantation programs, on top of the common activities that the Child Club has been hosting. The regular meetings also helped improve Sakil’s leadership and public speaking skills. Little by little, he may not notice it but he is a natural leader who can inspire others. When we conducted a session regarding human trafficking awareness, Sakil felt more compelled to spread the knowledge with others.

As he reflected on his transformation, Sakil says,

“Before joining the child club, I felt underconfident and scared of speaking in front of a crowd. Now, I feel happy, encouraged, and content when I participate in extracurricular activities. It has boosted my confidence and allowed me to share my ideas freely.”

It was not just us who saw the difference in his confidence, but he most definitely felt the change within him. What used to be a shy kid is now seen as a leader by younger students, taking up space and inspiring others to be leaders as well.

Today, Sakil continuously leads the club by organizing more programs and helping younger students with their academics. His future plans include organizing more human trafficking awareness programs for the juniors, on top of other meaningful initiatives lined up in the future. He recognized the Child Club not only as a group of like-minded students but also as a strong platform to enhance knowledge, develop skills, and amplify the voices of the vulnerable.
