We are honored to be a part of a huge step in preventing OSAEC in Quezon City—the most populous city in the Philippines, situated in the country’s capital region. We participated in the early stages of forming a child protection coalition through our Philippines partner, Sanghaya Foundation. In the coalition, we joined like-minded organizations, including International Justice Mission (IJM), World Vision, and End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography, and Trafficking of children (ECPAT Philippines,) with the local government to advance OSAEC policies.

The meeting discussed a proposal that seeks to give incentives to those who report verified OSAEC cases. We noticed that many cases are unreported due to common economic and cultural barriers like ‘minding one’s own business,’ aversion to conflict, or thinking ‘what’s in it for me?’ Through bridging these behavioral gaps towards reporting OSAEC, we could push for a more proactive community involvement where everyone looks after their community’s children.
What’s next? The coalition will continue working on strengthening the reporting and response systems. The coalition will also develop effective awareness campaign strategies and help build the local capacity to push for this new change in local communities. The coalition will continue to meet for future development strategies. You can count on us to keep committing to contributing meaningfully to policy development and collaborative efforts for child protection.
