Sanghaya, our partner organization in the Philippines, recently attended the NGO Summit. One of the key trends highlighted there was the growing concern over how the children of Overseas Filipino Seafarers (OFS) are becoming victims of online exploitation. It’s also quite ironic and alarming how the consumers of the same exploitative materials are also some members of the OFS themselves—an alarming reality that the discussion tackled thoroughly.

In the same week, our partners met up with a representative from Magsaysay—a leading maritime organization in the country. When we brought up what we’ve learned from the NGO Summit, they were not surprised. They shared that it concerns them too. Many seafarers had become addicted to child pornography, despite their efforts to take concrete steps against it.

That concern is part of why they reached out to us. They were able to witness one of our awareness campaigns, Kapitbahay Sessions, and sought collaboration with us. They are now ready to confront issues like this within their own organizations to ensure a safer future for children.

Although challenging, we are positive that our efforts create ripple effects that tap into communities that will help lessen Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC). We do it one program at a time!
