In Nepal, women and girls face an almost inhuman level of gender discrimination enabled by centuries of culture and beliefs. Anything that involves the female kind is seen as unnecessary and unimportant, even the most natural things like menstruation. Through our efforts, we aim to empower and change one life at a time.

Our Captivating Village Development Program in Chitwan, ten adolescent girls including the presidents, vice presidents, and members of the Nepal Rising Star Girls’ Club in Rapti-1, Chitwan, and the Nepal Angels Girls’ Club (Manahari-7, Makwanpur) Both Clubs successfully conducted a menstrual health awareness program in the New Aappani village.

The program we conducted was attended by 40 adolescent girls, along with teachers from the same village. According to the participants, there is still an unspoken culture of girls hiding menstruation when they get it. They hide it from their fathers and male siblings, as it is seen as “dirty”. The very use of sanitary pads is not even available in their villages, so they typically use torn pieces of old cloth instead.

In the program, we taught them that there is nothing wrong with bleeding and that it is purely natural. Natural things are nothing to be ashamed of. We taught them how to take care of themselves during it, the proper hygiene methods, and what to expect when they do not have it yet.

After the program, the girls expressed that they had learned many new things and mentioned that an awareness program like this had never been conducted in their school before. They expressed their gratitude to the organization and hoped for more programs like this in the future.
