Our Manila Slum Program (MSP) helps alleviate poverty by supporting the schooling of children from vulnerable communities in Manila. One of those girls is Melissa* (13).

Growing up, Melissa and her siblings lacked proper guidance from their parents. Although her mother is in contact and provides through her job as a household helper, most care and moral support fell on the shoulders of their grandmother, who tried her best to step up. When her Lola learned about MSP, she immediately sought help so that Melissa could be included in the program.

As a part of the program, Melissa found it easier to go to school. Moreover, our parenting seminars, which aim to strengthen the children’s support systems at home, were attended by her mother. These programs encouraged her to be more involved and intentional in supporting her children’s education. She learned about budgeting, which helps her ensure that Melissa can stay in school until she graduates.

Through our program, not only does Melissa have school support, but she is also growing up with stronger guidance and support from her mother. Openness is the first step to a better life, and we see that her mother is putting in the effort to be a more present mom. With the seminars and resources that we provide, they are on the way there.
