Our Chicken Farming Program aims to help families increase their financial income, enabling them to better support their children’s education and overall well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 3,000 to 6,000 [USD 424 to 848] annually.

As part of our routine visits, we visited Mahi Zuoshi (38). When we arrived, she was in the kitchen, preparing a modest meal, and she immediately stepped outside to greet us warmly. When she asked us inside, we observed the absence of furniture. No dining table, no chairs—nothing at all.

It did not take long for her to open up. She mentions how her husband died in a car accident, leaving her to raise her five children alone. Not only did she experience twice the work needed to be a good mother, but she also needed to pay off her husband’s debt of CNY 50,000 (USD 7,265). To pay it all off while supporting the kids, she heads to the fields to work every day before dawn. When she gets back home, she rushes to feed the pigs—no day is ever a rest day for Mahi.

Because of all that stress and pressure, Mahi had been noticing visible signs of it in her body. Her hair began to fall out, and she did not know what to do with it anymore. All she held on to was her optimism. She turned to things that are going well for her. Despite everything, she has access to five acres of land, has two pigs, and, because of our program, fifteen chickens.

When we asked her how she felt when she learned she would be a part of our Chicken Farming Program, she straightened her back and told us with confidence:

“If I can learn how to raise chickens properly, the chicks will survive better. Then I can raise them, sell them, and feed the kids. Once I know the skills, I can use them every year. And maybe this New Year, my children will finally have meat to eat.”

She not only wanted her children to survive, but she also wanted them to thrive. She knows that education is a necessity for her children’s success, which is why she prioritizes it the most. As we looked into her eyes, we not only saw a hardworking woman, but also a strong and remarkable individual who could move mountains if it meant something for her children.
