HET: Tara’s Tailoring Story
We visited Tara, a Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program graduate. Despite challenges, she is now thriving with two years in tailoring, sewing from home while caring for her daughter.
The Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program for Women started in August, thanks to Husky Energy (now a member of the Cenovus group of companies) with 51 students attending.
After the first roll call, the teacher gave a brief introduction about himself, shared the importance of attending the training, then handed out notebooks and pencils and began teaching.
The most basic sewing skills were taught, such as drawing lines and measuring the size and length with a ruler. Although this may seem like a simple task, for most of these women it’s challenging, because many have little to no education. Reading measurements and numbers as well as writing is a whole new learning exerience for them.
The classes were divided in such a way that there’s time for lecture and application wherein the students can practice the skills on their own. They all came by motorcycle and hurried back to herd cattle and sheep after class.
We are excited to see these 51 women learn and take hold of this opportunity so they can improve their way of life and increase their abilities and skills.
