Focused on reaching the most impoverished communities and villages in Nepal, our primary goal is to address the significant barriers that hinder the progress of the women and girls in these communities. Their lack of opportunity increases significantly their prospects for desperate decisions and potential exploitation – including human trafficking
For many, the solution is putting all efforts into getting dropped-out village girls back into the safety of school. For others, it is about health and livelihood improvements. Whatever approach we take, the aim is to foster positive change that empowers marginalized families, paving the way for a brighter and safer future.
How it Works
EDUCATION
Nepal has one of the world’s highest rates of child marriages. A UNICEF report (2020) revealed that Nepal is home to 5 million child brides, with 1.3 million of them married before the age of 15. Although the legal age for marriage in Nepal is 20, girls as young as 14 are married in remote Nepal locations. When a girl is married, this is usually the end of school for her.
Even if a girl is not married early, staying in school is still a challenge for her with education expenses being too high for impoverished families, and uneducated parents not seeing the value in education in any case.
We aim to bring as many out-of-school girls back into the stability of school. Additionally, we are collaborating with local school principals to enhance the quality of education, thereby increasing future opportunities for all children. Parents will be encouraged to attend awareness sessions about the importance of their daughters, laws regarding child marriage, and how to address their poverty. If necessary, improvements will be made to local school facilities to enhance the quality of educational resources and facilities.
By providing a higher quality education, we significantly reduce the risk of trafficking for these children.
LIVELIHOOD
We will work with the most impoverished and marginalized families in these communities to (1) sustainably improve their food capacity, ensuring they can feed their families, and (2) create livelihood opportunities. We’re designing skill development training focused on poultry farming and topics such as chicken, pig, and goat farming.
Where possible, selected women and girls leaving school will join vocational skill and training programs helping them to establish their own income-generating businesses to address their poverty.
By increasing their income, we aim to reduce the risk of migration for jobs, a major form of human trafficking in Nepal.
HEALTH
Where possible, our program will also benefit the entire community by improving overall health. Healthy individuals are better able to work, attend school, and participate in community activities, reducing their vulnerability to traffickers who prey on those in desperate situations.
By ensuring the community’s health, we create a stronger, more resilient population less likely to fall victim to human trafficking.
How To Help
Help out-of-school girls escape the cycle of child marriage and poverty through education. Enable families to achieve financial stability and nurture healthier, stronger communities:
- Donate USD 3,500 | AUD 5,000 and your gift will be matched by a foundation. You, your family, or your company will be directly responsible for helping to progress education for girls in an entire village community, and much more.
- Donate any amount and we will pool it with other contributions to reach USD 3,500 | AUD 5,000. This total will then be matched by a foundation.
Sponsor an entire village and you will receive:
- A six-monthly donor update about the program (November and May)
- A six-monthly update on our overall work and impact in Nepal (August and February)
