Every year, hundreds of students in Nepal are compelled to leave school due to their family conditions. According to statistics, 4.8% of students in Nepal still leave school each year. Among these students was Gyanu Khatri, a 14-year-old girl from Jughu, whose life was turned upside down after the sudden death of her father. Gyanu had been one of the brightest and most intelligent students in her class, but this tragic event shattered her dreams. As the eldest child, she had to take on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings and helping her mother with household chores, as her mother was now the sole breadwinner.
Gyanu shares, “After my dad died, my mom had to work every day for money. I had to leave school to take care of my brothers and sisters and help at home. It was hard for my mom to do everything, so she had to ask me to quit school. I was really sad, but I wanted my brothers and sisters to keep going to school. I took care of them and worked with my mom to help with money.
One day, my teachers and someone from Captivating Nepal came to our house and convinced my mom to let me go back to school. Captivating Nepal helped me with school things and the chance to keep studying. Now I’m back in school, in 7th grade, and helping my mom at home. Because of Captivating Nepal, I want to do well in school and follow my dreams.”
