In the second quarter of 2024, the program manager and admin communications officer of Captivating Nepal did a field assessment at Panchkhal for a needs assessment for the Captivating Village Program.

A focus group discussion was conducted with the participation of community members. Later on, we also facilitated household visits and interacted with individuals in the area. During our field assessment, we were accompanied by Mr. Ram Krishna Danuwar; one of the focal community persons to help us connect with the locals more. We reached nearby communities like Teenghare and Thulagaun to observe the communities, and also conducted a focus group discussion with the residents.

We learned about the pressing challenges of these communities, and one of those is the concerning number of suicide cases brought about by child marriage and its consequences. It tore our hearts to hear the lives of these young women end so early due to societal discrimination and pressure. All the more we feel the need to conduct awareness sessions about women empowerment through child education in these communities.

More than growing suicide cases, the community also undergoes various problems such as the availability of safe drinking water, lack of skilled individuals due to foreign employment and lack of opportunities in the area, dependency on the agriculture industry despite the lack of proper irrigation sources and lack of mediator between the farmers and market sellers, and more.

A lot of issues were identified in the community, and we are currently working closely with their leaders to help improve the quality of life of the citizens there. We are looking forward to report back new improvements in the future!
