We believe that a lot of impoverished mothers have the chance to elevate their and their children’s living standards if only given the opportunity to do so. Our One Hope Microfinance Program provides microloans starting at PHP 6,000 (USD 102).

How does this work? When acquiring their first loan, each client will be a part of a fellowship group where they must agree to commit to a weekly payment and attend to community-building activities. Once the loans are repaid, they are eligible for more loans with increments of PHP 3,000 (USD 51), until the maximum loanable amount of PHP 30,000 is reached. The client will then have 40 weeks to repay the succeeding loans.

We share to you the story of two women we have helped through this program—May Ann and Jewelyn.

May Ann joined last year. Her husband works in construction and will be away for an extended time. She is left with two young children while also doing household chores. Due to the meager salary that her husband sends home, she realized they need another income source. She joined the program hoping to start her own egg reselling business. Although she started small with 5-8 trays a week, she is optimistic about supplying eggs to most of the families in her neighborhood in the future.

Like May Ann, Jewelyn is a mother of two who also joined last year. With her first loan, she started a little barbecue station in front of her home where she grills every afternoon. In the Philippines, barbecue/street food spots like this are highly coveted and loved by the community due to its affordability and deliciousness. A good day would help her earn around PHP 1,000 (USD 17). Although still not enough for her family of 4, Jewelyn understands how success does not come overnight. Instead, she decides to show up every day until she could potentially expand or add more variety to her little barbecue spot.  She also focuses on building her family’s emergency savings at the moment.

Joining our program emboldens the two women to dream of bigger things. Not only will we help them with the capital, but their constant exposure to like-minded mother entrepreneurs constantly inspires them to show up every day and dream big.
