Poverty remains to be one main factor of sexual exploitation in the Philippines. Thus, reaching poor communities and teaching them how to fight OSAEC are crucial in ensuring the safety of the children.
In one online awareness campaign, a teacher for children with special needs shared that she received a report from a neighbor that a child with special needs is being abused in her own home.
Unfortunately, children with special needs can be more prone to exploitation because they cannot speak up or defend themselves.
Kapitbahay Sessions ("kapitbahay" is neighbor in English) is our most recent effort, through our field partner Honor 1000 Movement, to not only use the online platform in raising awareness about online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC), but also to involve survivors’ voices in the fight against this crime.
Over the past months, our partner Honor 1000 Movement has continuously increased and strengthened partnerships with various schools and organizations all over the Philippines through the Partners' Awareness Campaign Training (PACT). This has enabled the team to reach more students and communities and raise awareness on Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC).
Despite their own challenges during this pandemic, the staff from the Philippines and our team of parent and youth advocates in Manila and Siquijor (an identified at-risk area) continue to reach out to children and communities to teach them on how to protect themselves against OSAEC.
Sometimes, all it takes is for someone to ask a child if they are safe. So she sat down with her and asked, “Are you ok?”.
Part of the women's journey to restoration is the pursuit of justice against their perpetrators. During these times, the physical and emotional support they need is always there.
