Hamro Abhiyan – Making a Difference in Schools

Twenty schools including 1,466 students across 6 regions of Nepal participated in the Hamro Abhiyan human trafficking awareness program. This newly developed program is specific and intentional in content to reach students. Its interactive format works perfectly in the school setting.

The Hamro Abhiyan program, implemented by our partner 3 Angels Nepal, is highly acclaimed and has already won the “Asian Leadership Award” for the best trafficking prevention strategy.

The principal of one of secondary schools had this to say, “Poverty and geographical features in Nepal are often leading to trafficking. We need programs like this to equip our young people with knowledge to combat these problems.” Poverty and geographical features in Nepal are indicators of trafficking risks. Potential victims attempt to move from areas with extreme poverty to areas with less extreme poverty. In these instances, it is the desire of potential victims to migrate to escape poverty who are exploited by traffickers.

Reflections from Educators

Many schools have been identified in hot-spot trafficking regions of Nepal. Students from these regions are from poor, lower class families and are considered easier targets by traffickers. When the schools finally reopened after months of lockdown, our dedicated team of experts made a big push to reach out to as many schools and communities possible.

Moving Forward Despite Challenges

When the pandemic started in 2020, the Hamro Abhiyan Anti-Trafficking Awareness Program was one of our most affected programs on the ground. This 2021 was no different. There were window periods when restrictions were lifted, but were cut short with surges of COVID cases.

More than 300 Women and Children Reached

As many people have lost their jobs, a lot have been suffering from mental issues, a number of families are not able to put food on their plates, and the risk of trafficking is continuously increasing. Out of desperate need, some may be resorting to selling sexually explicit materials online, while some may be easily lured to crossing the borders illegally in search of foreign employment. Our partner, 3 Angels Nepal, turned to communities, reaching them one by one and conducting awareness programs so that women and children remain informed.
