Manila Slum Project Extends Support to Young Moms

In Manila’s busy streets, many children miss out on schooling. But there’s hope as we work to change their story. We’re helping 200 kids, mostly girls, in slum areas get an education through the Manila Slum Project (MSP). Education is key to breaking poverty’s grip, so we’re giving these children a chance to learn and succeed.

We don’t just end our service to these scholarship girls by supplying them with books and other school materials. We also provide mentorship to help them become good models of educated youth in their communities. Our goal is also to help their stories be heard and show others that investing in one’s education is always worth it.

Since we know that a large factor in providing education to this young generation is the financial means of the parents, our project goes beyond just providing financial support to these families. We’re also helping 5% of families find ways to earn more or move out of the slums for good. By addressing financial struggles with a long-term perspective, we’re paving the way for a brighter future.

Young Mom Joshua is Happy that Her Child Became Part of MSP

One of the moms of the beneficiaries that we want to highlight is Joshua. Joshua was a young mother and unemployed when her child got accepted as a beneficiary of the Manila Slum Project. The parenting seminars encouraged her to look for work opportunities within the barangay. Now, Joshua works as an encoder. She is now able to earn and provide for her family’s needs and still take care of her child as a mother.

We also recognize Joshua as one of the few mothers who is respectful and courteous. She always informs our staff early on if she will be late for our monthly meetings due to her work. One time, she shared that she asked her employer if she could clock out early to attend the parenting seminar that day. Joshua hopes that she can show and teach her child how to be respectful and courteous by being one; which she also learned in one of our parenting seminars.

Aside from assisting mothers with employment opportunities, we also aim to transform their mindset and teach them the right attitude towards sustainability. We are grateful for the continued support of our donors as we build up mothers like Joshua and lead them toward better and improved lives.
