OMY: Mose to Become A Doctor
Mose, a bright and determined student, dreams of becoming a doctor after witnessing her illiterate parents face discrimination at a hospital.
Our One More Year Scholarship Program (OMY) partners with the Shenzhen Charity Federation to support 500 qualified girls (and some boys) for “One More Year” in senior high school. If they are successful in meeting the scholarship requirements, we will continue to support them until they graduate.
One of our beneficiaries is Wu Jingmei (name changed for privacy) and she sent us a heartwarming letter about how OMY changed her life for the better.
Hello!
I am Wu Jingmei, a student who attended high school at Meigu County High School in Sichuan Province, Xichang Campus. I am now studying Animal Medicine at the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine at Southwest Minzu University. I’ll share why I chose this major later, but first, I would like to share my experiences during my three years of high school.
When I wore the military training uniform again, I thought of how naive I was when I first entered high school. At that time, I was determined to go to university—but that determination alone was not enough to support me through three years of high school. Thankfully, my mother constantly supported me. Even though her health was poor and she had to stay in the hospital and take medication, she never stopped reminding me to study hard. She said, “Because I am sick, you should work even harder. Don’t worry too much about tuition fees—both the government and caring individuals are helping with that. So, study hard, because only through education can a girl from the mountains see the world outside.
I always kept my mother’s words in mind, strictly disciplined myself, and studied diligently. I am grateful not only to my mother but also to the government, society, the school, and all of you. You have paved a green path for my academic journey, allowing me to focus on my studies without worry and helping me achieve my dream of attending university. Once again, thank you for your support.
During these three years of high school, I gained so much. I met many new classmates and made many friends. Whenever I faced difficulties in life or studies, they were always willing to help me solve problems. The teachers also cared deeply about our lives and studies, always selflessly sharing their knowledge and assistance when we encountered difficulties. I can say that in these three years of high school, I learned to be grateful and to cherish everything. My third year of high school was perhaps the most unforgettable. In that year, I learned the importance of effort—as long as you work hard, miracles can happen. I also experienced the excitement, joy, and even sadness that comes with receiving results—all of which made those moments flavorful.
Over these three years, I learned many life lessons: asking questions when you don’t understand, not procrastinating, and tackling weaker subjects head-on before it’s too late. I also learned to focus when doing homework, especially how to write neatly and cleanly, and to practice writing faster to gain extra marks during exams. Even though the college entrance exam is not the end of life’s journey, it is certainly a milestone along the way.
I am very happy that I was able to do my best and get into university. When I received the admission notice, I was so excited that I couldn’t control my thoughts. At that moment, it felt like I had received a grand gift. After receiving the admission notice, I eagerly awaited the start of the school year. During that waiting period, I imagined my university life countless times. It may not unfold exactly as I imagined, but it still feels ridden with beauty and mystery. I hoped that my university life will make me braver and fill my days with enriching experiences, such as participating in various club activities and meeting like-minded friends. These first few days of university life have already made me feel that there are many possibilities ahead. Even though I am still in the process of getting familiar with things, I believe my future university life will develop as I hope.
I did not choose to study Animal Medicine solely because I love animals, but because I am fascinated by life sciences. I hope to better understand the mysteries of life through studying. Another reason is my future career plan. With the increase in the number of pets, the demand for pet healthcare is also growing. Studying Animal Medicine can provide me with a wide range of job opportunities.
I wanted to share these points with you. Finally, I want to thank you once again for your support in my academic journey. I will absolutely put in my best effort, study hard, improve myself, and serve the people and my country. I aim to become an active member of society. Once again, I sincerely thank you, uncles and aunts.
