Turning Students into Advocates Against Human Trafficking

The highly acclaimed, award winning, Hamro Abhiyan anti-trafficking program is rolling out through schools in Nepal. During a 3-month period (July to December 2019), 66 schools which included 2,027 students participated in this interactive, school-based program. The Hamro Abhiyan program tackles the key issues surrounding human trafficking which turns these students into advocates in their school and local community.

Everyone was very keen to learn new things regarding human trafficking. Their responses towards our program were positive and inspiring. A principal of one of the schools said, “I am deeply grateful for everyone who organised such a wonderful program in our school. I really hope that our students will raise awareness among the people by sharing these things. Teaching students is not easy but the work 3 Angels Nepal has done in order to create awareness among the students is highly appreciated.”

Reflections from Educators

Many schools have been identified in hot-spot trafficking regions of Nepal. Students from these regions are from poor, lower class families and are considered easier targets by traffickers. When the schools finally reopened after months of lockdown, our dedicated team of experts made a big push to reach out to as many schools and communities possible.

Moving Forward Despite Challenges

When the pandemic started in 2020, the Hamro Abhiyan Anti-Trafficking Awareness Program was one of our most affected programs on the ground. This 2021 was no different. There were window periods when restrictions were lifted, but were cut short with surges of COVID cases.

More than 300 Women and Children Reached

As many people have lost their jobs, a lot have been suffering from mental issues, a number of families are not able to put food on their plates, and the risk of trafficking is continuously increasing. Out of desperate need, some may be resorting to selling sexually explicit materials online, while some may be easily lured to crossing the borders illegally in search of foreign employment. Our partner, 3 Angels Nepal, turned to communities, reaching them one by one and conducting awareness programs so that women and children remain informed.

Awareness Program for Transport Workers

Our partner, 3 Angels Nepal, saw the crucial role of transport workers in Nepal in combating human trafficking. Knowingly or unknowingly, they could be transporting potential trafficking victims across the border.
