Pimp Targeted Trisha at a Local Fair Market

Trisha* (name changed for privacy), 17, was enticed with a tempting offer: an attractive salary and free lodging in India. She was about to be taken to India by a pimp when our team in Nepal intercepted her.

A month ago, Trisha completed her 10th standard in school (10th class is commonly referred to as “Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC)” or “Matriculation.” It is the final year of secondary education in Nepal) and stayed at home to help her mother. In her family of four, her elder sister had dropped out of school and got married. The family had no stable source of income. Her father worked as a laborer but his work was not regular. As a result, they would sometimes only have one meal during the day, making it extremely difficult to make ends meet

With a heavy heart, Trisha’s mother told her that she couldn’t afford an education even though she wanted to continue her studies. To earn money, she started working for others and went to Haat Bazar (A local market fair that occurs once a week for trading goods). She used to carry goods from traders’ homes to the bazaar and earn little wages.

Her attention was caught by a man in the bazaar, who came to talk to her. As a way of gaining her trust, he even provided her with the work of carrying goods a few times. He helped her earn money, and she began to be at ease with him.

Eventually, the pimp collected her personal information and lured her to India with his promises of good-paying jobs. Trisha shared the job offer with her mother, and she accepted it at once because she was tempted by the man’s job offer because they badly needed a regular household income.

Trisha was then brought from her village in Rukum to Nepalgunj, where she was kept in a hotel for a few days before crossing the border. After investigating the man, it was found out that he was indeed a pimp and that there were other people involved in the case, so the pimp was taken by police for further investigation.

Trisha was brought to Women’s Safe Haven, run by our local program partner 3 Angels Nepal, and fully funded by Captivating, for safety and education about human trafficking. She is currently learning new skills like sewing which she can use in the future to earn her own source of livelihood to help her family.
