Our One More Year Scholarship Program (OMY) partners with Shenzhen Charity Federation to support 500 qualified girls (and some boys) for “One More Year” in senior high school. If they are successful in meeting the scholarship requirements, we will continue to support them until they graduate. Know more about OMY here.
One of our beneficiaries is Mose, who is a member of a family of five that dwells in a government home built with CNY 25,000 (USD 182) government subsidy. Her father makes money through agriculture, planting and selling potatoes, buckwheat, and corn. Moreover, they also raise livestock consisting of 6 pigs, 1 cow, and 12 chickens. The combined annual income for all the farming profit amounts to CNY 20,000 (USD 146).
Mose is lucky to live in a family where education is one of the more important priorities. Her parents are willing to sell everything they own just so they could finish their studies and get into a good university. Not many children are lucky to have such supportive parents. But sometimes, motivational support and proper prioritization is not enough. Despite her parents’ hard work, the money made from farming is not enough to support her studies fully.
When we visited their home to learn more about their family situation, we observed that their home is tidy and homey. Although her parents were not very articulate, we had a pleasant interaction with them. We learned that Mose is a very helpful and grateful child, always offering a helping hand with farm work and household chores. We also find her cheerful and nice, showing how she was brought up well by good people.
When asked about her dreams, Mose expressed her dream of becoming a doctor. Her parents were once snubbed and neglected by the county hospital staff due to being illiterate, and she hated seeing her parents be denied of basic human rights like these.
Before we left, both Mose and her parents expressed their gratitude for the financial assistance, which has eased the family’s economic burden and supported the child’s education. We left their home feeling at ease, because we know that Mose will not waste the one more year of education we helped her attain.
