Our Pig Farming program aims to increase families’ overall income and ensure they can sustainably support their children’s education and well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 5,000 to 8,000 (USD 700 to 1,120) per year from the pig business.

One of our beneficiaries is Fu Ping—a mother who supports her children, parents, and grandparents. In their home, the elders and the children count on those who are still able-bodied. Her husband is the primary breadwinner, making around CNY 42,000 (5,778 2,064 USD) per year. Thankfully, they own seven acres of land where they grow peppers and vegetables. Although it sounds like seven acres of farmland is a lot in other countries, the yield does not make much—only CNY 15,000 (USD) annually. All this money made is hardly enough to cover their daily living expenses, Fu Ping’s children’s education, and the elders’ medical bills.

The piglets we gave her to raise could greatly improve their home situation. She only needed to invest enough time and effort to enjoy the fruits of her labor. We had an instructor teach her how to raise the sow properly to equip her with the proper knowledge to maximize profits. The piglets initially weighed 50 pounds each, and we also provided them with good-quality feed. Fu Ping had never raised half-grown piglets before, so she was thankful to have skipped one of the more difficult parts of raising livestock.

After the first week, the pigs have acclimated well at her home. Every day, she tended to them and trusted the process—and slowly, she observed a significant improvement in the pigs’ energy levels. Aside from the feed we provided, she also fed them with cornmeal and bran. Now, her heaviest pig weighs about 100 pounds!

When we visited her home, she happily showed us the pigs we gave her months ago. True enough, they are very healthy and looked well cared for. We asked her about her family situation, and her chirpy demeanor suddenly turned stern. She softly opened up to us about the challenges of having a lot of family members at home, but no one to help you. She cannot blame them either, four of them are elderly members of the family, and they only seldom feel well enough to help. They once told her how terrible they felt about burdening her so much to support her. Although it is a truly dire situation, it is no one’s fault.

We also learned that she is a great mother as she never considered giving up on her children’s education, and she believes that one day, they will make their own path different from where they come from. Despite these challenges, the piglets have been giving smiles to their faces. To them, they are not only pigs, but they are symbols of hope in their household.
