We believe that one of the main tenets of empowering women is helping them achieve financial independence. If a woman has her own money and does not depend on her survival on her husband’s salary, she could make better choices for herself and lessen the likelihood of falling for risky offers from potential human traffickers. In Nepal, our program My Business, My Freedom—provides microloans for mothers in extreme poverty. To maximize their chances of success, they must regularly attend meetings with their women’s group where they learn about entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, as they socialize with empowered and like-minded women.
Tara Maya Waiba Tamang (39) is one of our beneficiaries and a true testament to the transformative power of microfinance. She belongs to the Jhyalchaur women’s group, and received her first loan of NPR 30,000 (USD 215) to start her vegetable farm.

She first cultivated a small plot of land, around 3 kattha (4083 sq ft), and it showed what a natural agricultural entrepreneur she is! She had easily sold vegetables and quickly created a consistent and sustainable cash flow. From a humble 3 kattha, she had eventually expanded her farm into a remarkable 10 kattha (13,610 sq ft)! Later on, she went beyond vegetables. She also invested in livestock and purchased a cow. Now with the steady milk sales, Tara is far better from where she started.
Tara Maya’s combined monthly income ranges from NPR 15,000 (USD 108) to NPR 20,000 (USD 143). This significant achievement has not only enabled her to cover all household expenses and her son’s education costs—but also allowed her to save a portion of her earnings. Every month, she has an extra NPR 5,000 (USD 35) to save for rainy days. But with how things are looking, rainy days are far from happening!
Recently, Tara Maya secured a second loan of NPR 35,000 (USD 351). She mentions her plans to expand with more livestock and add more seasonal vegetables to her farm. The next time we hear from her, we will not be surprised if she doubles her achievements!
