We are in pure awe witnessing meaningful female friendships among our Manila Slum Program beneficiaries. In Marytown, we spotted the inseparable Kyrie and Joy, both 9th-grade students. Looking at both of them, you can just see how their souls are tightly knotted, and it made sense when we explored the two girls’ pasts. They both started their difficult life together on the streets. When they were younger, they would beg for food, and sometimes sell random things just to get by.

Instead of falling victim to their past, they reclaimed their space in the world through education. When we spoke with them, they shared how grateful they were for the opportunity to be in school. When one of them encounters a challenge in school, the other would simply cheer and motivate the other about their privilege to receive an education.

Their dedication shines through because they are one of our high-performing students. This means that they are not only in school, but they also belong to a small group of students who have access to our further support like career and leadership development programs.

We merely provide opportunities, but true success comes from hard work of our beneficiaries, and the beautiful friendships that make everything lighter.
