It was a pretty successful run for the past year with our first Manila Slum Program (MSP) community, Ronas Garden. In January, we gathered our beneficiaries to reflect on the past year and learn about their expectations for the coming year.

We have already built trust among this group, so it was not a challenge for them to open up. During the discussion, the girls shared their struggles and challenges. Many shared their ongoing financial difficulties, including uncertainty about finishing high school or pursuing college due to their parents’ limited income. Others spoke about feeling mentally stressed and overwhelmed by academic requirements. As they shared these personal issues, the girls made each other feel seen and empathetic with. Sometimes, they would share how they feel the same way or are going through a similar situation. We are glad that this space became these girls’ safe spaces, to be honest and vulnerable.

Talking about one’s struggles is one thing, while taking action is another. Despite these challenges, the girls continue to push through and take one small step at a time. They keep showing up to school, attending classes, and doing their best each day. We also took time to celebrate their achievements. Some of the girls were recognized as the “most improved” in their respective classes. That means they were attending classes more and are performing better academically.

After reflecting, we set realistic goals for the coming year. The girls reflected on what they want to achieve and the small steps they need to take to get there.

We ended the session with Nina, one of our very supportive partners from Australia, who shared words of encouragement and offered a prayer for the girls. In it, she said, “I hope they continue to grow and thrive despite their challenging living conditions,” before they all said their heartfelt amens in unison.
