Sarita (15) is a 10th-grade girl who is a daughter of a contractor. She had been having some school problems. She finished all her classes in 10th grade, but was not able to pass her exam due to failure in one of the subjects. The exam is important because it will enable her to continue studying to the next level.

To help her, her father enrolled her in a tutoring program. At first, it went well. She was motivated to study even more to pass her exam. Perhaps she got too motivated, and that’s because she had been interacting with a boy. Every day, she will meet with him on her way to her tutoring classes. When her father found out about this, he was furious and scolded her. Her mother beat her as a form of imposing “discipline”. Hurt, Sarita rebelled even more. Instead of going to her class the next day, she went to her friend’s house and tore up all her notebooks and textbooks and threw them on the road.

When the boy heard about what happened, he suggested that they go to India and run away together. They loaned some money from a friend and went on an angsty teenage adventure without even changing their clothes. To avoid suspicion at the border, they took separate auto-rickshaws to cross the border.

As she was about to cross the border, our staff stopped her for questioning. Suspicious of her unaccompanied travel, we asked about her destination. She initially claimed she was going to the nearby bazaar to buy goods, but had only NPR 200 (USD 1.45). After persistent questioning, she revealed the truth. The staff recorded her details and contacted her parents, who were worried and searching for her. The staff informed them about her attempted travel to India, and her parents requested that they stop her.

Our staff took her to the ward police station for further investigation. She received education on human trafficking, its causes, effects, and preventive measures. Additionally, she was informed about the risks of traveling alone and child marriage. She was eventually reunited with her family.
