When one looks at Mamata Rana, they see an inspirational woman in their community: A mother of two children who has overcome a lot of struggles and continuously gives back to her community. She is currently the Chairperson of her women’s group, and we have known her through our My Business-My Freedom Microfinance Program for several years now. It’s as if she had no troubles pass her way, but those who truly know her can tell she would not be as confidently radiant without her struggles.

Years ago, a tragedy struck in Mamata’s home. Her husband passed away due to a snake bite. The sudden loss left her distraught and in a very financially vulnerable position. Without the salary and emotional support of her husband, she feels lost. She had to work, manage household expenses, and care for her children—on top of facing daily discrimination due to the Nepali society’s stigma towards single mothers.

Even as a grieving widow, Mamata had to be constantly on the move for her children. During this difficult time, Mamata heard of our livelihood projects. At that time, we offered Tailoring, Weaving, and Crafting. After completing the program, she received a microloan of NPR 35,000 to open her small shop (USD 251). Fast forward to today, and that little shop has grown successfully! She shares, “I am truly happy because I can now provide for my children’s education and manage household expenses with ease.” She did not realize that her achievements would show others that if she can do it, then perhaps they can, too!

Now, Mamata continues to exist as a socially aware and empowered woman! She now actively encourages other women in her community to become self-reliant than her. Once a discriminated member of society, she now stands tall—advocating for business and entrepreneurship to motivate economic independence.

Perhaps the mountains were placed in Mamata’s way, not to block her from living a beautiful life. Maybe they were there to show others that they can be moved, too!
