Our Manila Slum Program (MSP) helps alleviate poverty by supporting the schooling of children from vulnerable communities in Manila. Sometimes when we visit communities, the children themselves make it known that they need our help—one of those children is Jenny.

Before joining the program, Jenny’s days were spent helping her family earn a living by selling on the streets. School was a distant dream—something she thought she had to give up to help her family survive. But through the Manila Slum Program, Jenny was given a chance to return to school. She quickly proved her determination, becoming one of the top-performing girls in the program. On other days, she also mentors younger children in her community.

Jenny is a truly inspiring girl to her younger peers. However, a few months ago, Jenny suddenly stopped attending school and joining group activities. We were curious and reached out to her. There, we discovered that Jenny had been facing bullying at school. The emotional toll had become too heavy, causing her to withdraw from classes—far from her active and focused self.

We intervened early. Together with Jenny’s mother and teacher, we found a way forward—encouraging Jenny to finish Grade 9 and supporting her through the remaining school months. Her school responded with kindness, granting her special consideration to complete the year.

Jenny and her mother have since decided to transfer to a new school for a fresh start. Despite the pain and fear she experienced, Jenny’s resolve remains strong—she is determined to continue her education and build a better future.
