In Nepal, our program My Business-My Freedom (MBMF) provides microloans for mothers susceptible to human trafficking. To maximize their chances of success, they must regularly attend meetings with their women’s group, where they learn about entrepreneurship and financial literacy while socializing with empowered, like-minded women through our community-building activities.
Radhika (21)* lives with her husband and father-in-law in Dhangadhi. Together, they dream of a stable financial future where a medical emergency would not easily shake them. Her husband works as a mason, while Radhika farms from home. When her husband is out of work, he helps her with the work.
Ever since Radhika was a child, she had been acquainted with poverty. It has become a natural state for her that influenced the way she thinks and moves around the world. The poor are always prone to vulnerability and desperation. Their desire to change their lives for the better is sadly being taken advantage of by malicious actors like human traffickers. She recalls a time when she truly felt vulnerable. “I suffered a lot. When I went to India to buy goods, I was often mistreated, and when I sought work, I could not find any due to a lack of skills. At that time, I was at high risk of human trafficking,” she tells us.
When she heard about our organization and that we are offering sewing and tailoring training in Pokhara, she was thrilled. She completed three months of training and returned home to her hometown with a brand new set of skills and renewed confidence. She reached out to our program, MBMF, and joined the Jugeda Women’s Group. After careful consideration, she took out an initial loan of NPR 30,000 (USD 206) and worked with what she knew best: farming. After repaying the initial loan, she later expanded and took out another NPR 60,000 (USD 412). She was able to repay that in full again and recently took out NPR 80,000 (USD 549)
Today, Radhika expresses deep gratitude: “Through 3 Angels, I discovered the true meaning of life. I now have the skills to earn, a supportive husband, and a renewed sense of purpose. I thank Captivating International and encourage other women to become aware, achieve financial independence, and stand against heinous crimes like human trafficking.”
