To bridge the education gaps of children in remote villages in China, we started our Send A Volunteer Teacher Program for newly graduated teachers and retired educators. One of these is Teacher Yang ShanHai (20), a Math, English, and Physical Education Teacher for 33 grade 5 students. He started in March of 2025, and since then, he has been serving as the head of an extracurricular activity called the Life+ Program. We are fortunate to hear his story through a letter he sent us.
“As a freshman majoring in English education, I have always carried a deep curiosity and passion for teaching. Fueled by this enthusiasm, I set out on a teaching journey to the Daliang Mountains, where I joined Taha Village Primary School and began a unique chapter of my educational life.
Upon arriving at Taha Village Primary School, I was greeted by the simple campus surroundings and the innocent faces of the children. I felt both excited and deeply aware of the responsibility ahead. I was assigned to teach Grade 5 students in Math, English, and Physical Education—a role that presented both a challenge and a valuable opportunity for growth.

In math class, I saw the children’s eagerness for knowledge shining in their eyes. They worked hard to keep up, thinking carefully through each problem. This taught me that I needed to explain abstract formulas and theorems in smarter, more relatable ways—using real-life examples to open their minds.
Teaching English was both fun and challenging. I tried to spark their interest through games and storytelling. Watching the children grow from being shy and afraid to speak, to eagerly raising their hands to answer questions, gave me a deep sense of accomplishment. PE class became more than just a time for them to release energy—it was also a special chance for me to bond with them and build trust. We ran and laughed together on the playground, and those moments of shared joy and sweat became some of my most treasured memories.
Every day during this teaching experience was full and meaningful. While I was helping the children grow, I was also drawing strength and inspiration from their pure and open hearts. This journey will always be etched into my path as an educator, giving me the courage and motivation to keep moving forward.”
