Qubi Meimei's Confidence

Our Chicken Farming Program aims to help families increase their financial income, enabling them to better support their children’s education and overall well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 3,000 to 6,000 [USD 420 to 840] annually.  We would like to share one of our beneficiaries’ stories, Qubi Meimei (53).

To arrive at Qubi Meimei’s home, we had to go through a rugged mountain trail, but it was worth it when we saw her: a middle-aged woman with a slightly hunched back from years of hard work, wearing a faded head scarf that had likely seen her busiest days. Her two sons were already home from school and were helping with the household chores. 

When her sons were younger, her husband passed away. She was not prepared to handle all of these responsibilities on her own, but she pulled through by farming. 

“The cow is for field work, the pig we’re saving for the New Year — only the chickens can be sold to help with daily expenses,” she said, lifting her faded headscarf to wipe the sweat from her brow. “Every expense must be calculated so that we have enough for our needs,” she added.

That’s why when she heard about our chicken farming program, she was thrilled by the opportunity. She may be struggling financially, but Qubi was confident in two things: her hard work and her quick learning. With proper skills, she believed she could improve the chickens’ survival rate and prepare for expanding her flock in the future.

True enough, Qubi’s confidence showed in how she took care of the chickens. She describes her days of farming with her sons as the “warmest moments” of her life. She told us she was deeply grateful for the opportunity we provided. The chicken farming project has given her renewed hope in life, and she firmly believes that with her own hands, she can raise her two sons and give them a better future.
