We recognize that financial literacy applies across all income brackets, and not just the rich. So when we started our savings program under the Manila Slum Program (MSP), we were thrilled to see how it would go. Our first batch started with 13 mothers from MSP 2 – Marytown.

Even without our regular meetings, the mothers continued meeting on their own! It’s a true testament that the mothers have bonded together and formed a real community of like-minded mothers amongst themselves. They organized themselves into smaller groups, chose their own meeting times, and kept saving together to reach their personal goals.

We are glad we were able to help them start saving for their future. But more than that, we are more grateful that this initiative bonded them even more. Here are a few reflections from two mothers, Jen and Reya:

“My daughter saw me putting coins into my coin bank. One day, I saw her doing the same! That’s when I realized this is a habit, a discipline, I can pass on to my children.” -Jen

“Saving with other moms is more fun. We became friends. We learned from each other. Sometimes it even felt like a healthy competition! I was inspired by what the others were doing.” -Reya

Little habits like this form over time and we are glad to have imparted the skill of saving to them.
