Our Anti-Human Trafficking efforts do not stop at interception. We believe that the first step to prevent women and girls from being lured forever lies in the first and fundamental step: awareness.
On April 8 and May 15th of last year, we held an anti-human trafficking awareness program at Purnabas and Laljhadi Municipality. A total of 129 women and girls attended the program, and they learned about the causes and consequences of human trafficking, common methods employed by traffickers, and their community’s role in its prevention.
During the program in Purnabas, we heard a heartbreaking case of a girl lured into working in Sampurnanagar, India—as told by her relatives. They said that she had been uncontactable for the past two years, despite multiple and desperate attempts. They expressed how they felt like they lost her, yet are still deeply hopeful she will come back home one day.
In Laljhadi, three adolescent girls shared their personal experiences. They had been lured into early child marriage and taken to India for work. Tragically, in one of the cases, a husband killed his wife during a domestic dispute. These real-life stories highlighted the severe consequences of child marriage and trafficking.
Participants from both municipalities expressed that such awareness initiatives are essential for increasing community vigilance. They called for more frequent programs like this in the future. Hopefully, when we come back, newer sets of ears will be receiving our sessions to spread the word against human trafficking.
