As a part of our routine awareness program against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC), we visited a community in Brgy. West Kamias. We received a warm reception from the community, which included the barangay captain, kagawad, and leaders from the youth, children, vendors, public transport, women, urban poor, and solo parents—a truly diverse group that spans different demographics.

During the seminar, the participants recognized the importance of their roles as community leaders in helping protect children. To them, a village truly raises a child, and while parents have the most critical role in guiding and supporting their children, their community also has a responsibility to look after one another. When they learned about the trauma that children endure in OSAEC, including their challenges involving rescue and rehabilitation, they were even more alarmed by the importance of prevention.

Our main takeaway? Community leaders play a huge role in guiding people, sharing knowledge, and creating awareness about OSAEC. Their influence in their communities plays a big role in the residents taking preventative measures very seriously. When we handed them our information and activity booklets, they expressed immense appreciation for the work that we do.

Through discussions like this, we continue to strengthen community networks, empowering leaders and residents alike to take an active role in protecting children from online exploitation.
