We believe that preventing human trafficking starts with awareness. Recently, we conducted our award-winning Hamro Abhiyan Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Program in Jhapa District. This area is considered high-risk for human trafficking due to its open border with India. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, limited access to education, and low awareness increase the vulnerability of women and girls to exploitation. The local community raised these concerns, so we thought it best to conduct four awareness programs across the district to address these issues.

We successfully conducted anti-trafficking workshops at Shree Birendra Secondary School, Bibhuti Bidhya Mandhir Secondary School, Pragyan Academy, and S.T. Kujur Academy in Jhapa. A total of 254 students participated in our activities, where they learned essential awareness on human trafficking, its risks, root causes, and effective prevention strategies.

During the program, we found that many students had very limited knowledge about human trafficking. Some students shared that they previously only thought of human trafficking as kidnapping or selling people. However, through the activities and learning cards used in the session, they realized that trafficking could happen in many ways. The program helped them understand the various methods traffickers use and how people can become victims. As a result, students gained a much clearer understanding of the issue.

Our program is well-received by the school staff and students. The Principal of Shree Birendra Secondary School expressed his sincere appreciation for the program and showed keen interest in organizing similar awareness sessions in the future. He highlighted that the session stood out from other programs due to its interactive methodology and practical approach. He further emphasized the importance of such initiatives in educating young people and strengthening community efforts to prevent human trafficking.

One of the teachers shared that such programs should also be conducted for teachers. He mentioned that teachers usually know only the surface of these issues, but this event provided deeper understanding and practical techniques on how to interact with students while discussing sensitive and serious topics. He appreciated the program for addressing important issues in an engaging and practical way.

These types of feedback makes us even more eager to share our efforts to these communities. We are glad that not only was the event successful, but the knowledge we shared also permanently took up space in these people’s minds that they could also share to others.
