Karuna* (15) comes from a family of seven. Her father is a laborer, while her mother is a daily-wage farm worker and a homemaker. Due to a huge gap in their household income and family size, their family remains poor, and every day is survival mode for them.

Sometimes, Karuna comes with her mother to do farm work; oftentimes, she stays at home to do household chores. Although she always wanted to go to school, her family cannot afford it. At age fifteen, she had never attended school, never knew how to read or write, or learn basic numeracy skills.

Things began to change when she joined our Captivating Village Development Program. She learned that a part of our program is to conduct Accelerated Learning Programs (ALP) in her village to help out-of-school girls like her catch up on education. She was very happy to learn about this opportunity available within her own community. With the support of a community facilitator from our partner organization,  Karuna successfully enrolled in our ALP Center.

Throughout the program, Karuna has been gaining basic reading and writing skills, as well as life skills and awareness of gender-based issues such as domestic violence and child marriage. The center is also helping her build her confidence in speaking and learning. She is also learning about her rights, the importance of protecting the environment, the basics of local government, and common issues faced by people in her community: from floods to seasonal diseases.

While unable to prioritize her early education, Karuna’s parents expressed their happiness and sincere gratitude to our program for providing her with the opportunity to participate in the ALP sessions.

In Karuna’s words: “I would like to thank Aasaman Nepal, Global Development Group (GDG), Captivating International and the project team for their support and for creating this opportunity to learn in my community.”
